Every student in the college are encouraged to complete a 10 hour community service at any welfare homes or just about any community that needs help. The task was given to us back when it was January. However, after much procrastination, I finally started it today. After 4 whole months while most of the people have finished their 10 hours. Lol. Hey! I sacrificed my day off to go do some good deeds okay. Proud moment. :D
The welfare home that I chose was Wisma Harapan that is located nearby my college. In fact, it only takes about a 5 minute walk to reach the place. This home was established for the people with Down's Syndrome. Although, some of them seems fairly fine. Oh well.
Anyway, I have decided to do the community service for 4 hours straight with Ee Vein. No, we were planning to do it for 5 hours actually but they are only open until 4 o' clock. So, 4 hours it is. Nonetheless, the remaining 6 hours seems such a long time more. Le sigh.
Going to Wisma Harapan was an eye opener for me. You know how society regard people with Down's Syndrome as handicapped and are always dependent on people? Well, guess what. I had a whole new perspective of them today. They are actually pretty much independent and are capable of doing simple things like glueing stuff, sorting stuff, arranging stuff, packing stuff, cleaning up and so many more. What I like most about them is that they are just so friendly despite the fact that they are special in their own way. Everyone who passes by will receive a big and sincere smile as well as a very welcoming 'Hi' from them. Seriously, they should be looked up to and not be shunned away. They're a really nice group of people. :)
As of now, I think I need a break. I've been doing the same thing for the past 4 hours at the place. Just in case you're wondering, all I did was glueing, packing and taping the box of henna that is going to be sold. Exactly what they've been doing for the past 2 weeks. And a bit of sweeping and mopping. Things that I don't even do at home. Lol. I am so rebellious.
Exhausted.
